BEIJING: The delegates elected to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) are broadly representative, the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee said.
A total of 2,296 delegates have been elected to attend the congress, which is proposed to be convened on October 16 in Beijing.
As many as 771 delegates, or 33.6 percent of the total, are from the grassroots, including 192 workers, 85 farmers and 266 professional and technicians, according to the statement issued on the election of the delegates to the congress.
There are 619 female delegates, or 27 percent of the total, an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared with the figure at the 19th CPC National Congress in 2017, the department said, adding that 264 delegates from 40 ethnic minority groups will also attend the congress. The delegates come from various sectors of the society, administrative levels and institutions, including those linked with the Party, government departments, enterprises, public institutions and people’s organizations.
The average age of the delegates is 52.2 years, and about 59.7 percent of them are under 55. About 95.4 percent of them have a diploma from junior college or above, while more than half of the delegates own a master’s degree. The department said 2,224 delegates, or 96.9 percent of the total, joined the CPC after the reform and opening-up started in 1978.
Strict procedures were observed throughout the electoral process, from nomination and candidate selection to organizational review and election, and all grassroots organizations of the CPC were mobilized, with an average participation rate of 99.5 percent of members.
Various measures, including the establishment of tip-off platforms and the mobilization of supervision task force, were adopted to ensure a clean election.
Earlier, The 20th CPC National Congress has been proposed to be convened on October 16 in Beijing. The eligibility of the delegates will be verified by a special review committee before they attend the upcoming congress, according to the statement. The delegates were elected following the Party’s constitution and in strict accordance with the CPC Central Committee’s requirements, the statement said, adding that the process adhered to the Party leadership combined with democracy. The delegates are composed of outstanding CPC members who are highly-qualified ideologically and politically, have good work and life styles, are competent in discussing state affairs, and have made remarkable achievements in their work, said the statement.
