PUL-E-KHUMRI, (Afghanistan): At least 50 militants have been confirmed dead and more than 30 others injured in Dand-e-Ghori district of the northern Baghlan province, Abdul Razeq, a senior army officer, said Saturday.
According to the official, the government forces launched operations against Taliban bastion in Dand-e-Ghori district from ground and air on Thursday night and the operations lasted until Friday morning. As a result, 50 insurgents had been killed and more than 30 others injured, the official added.
The restive Dand-e-Ghori district, 3 km outside provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, has been regarded as the Taliban main base in the troubled Baghlan province. Taliban militants who have been ruling the restive Dand-e-Ghori district over the past five years have yet to make comments on the situation.
Meanwhile, Police in the southern Kandahar province have arrested 15 suspected militants and five criminals over the past one month, provincial police spokesman Jamal Barikzai said Saturday.
The suspected militants, according to the official, have confessed to their affiliation with the Taliban and involvement in subversive activities in Miwand, Shah Walikot and other parts of the restive province. Barikzai also said the five criminals were involved in theft and robbery in parts of the province including the provincial capital Kandahar city.–Agencies
