62-year-old rape survivor loses battle with life in India

KOLKATA: A 62-year-old braveheart from Sandeshkhali, who had been battling death at a Kolkata hospital for the past 27 days after being raped, tortured and her private parts brutalized, finally lost the battle Tuesday morning, reported Times of India.

The survivor was admitted in the NRS Hospital after being referred to by the Basirhat subdivisional hospital on July 6. The woman had managed to record her statement, which led to the arrest of the prime accused Rajeswar Maity. Doctors at NRS were shocked by the nature of injury and the brutality committed on the victim. She was admitted in the gynaecology department under Dr Debjani Bhadra.

The perpetrators had inserted objects, including beer bottle and sticks inside her private parts. Speaking to the media, her son claimed that his mother was tortured for protesting against some goons, who were drinking alcohol behind her small-time restaurant.

Only one of them has been arrested while the rest are absconding.

“My mother – who usually stays at the eatery run by her stays at the eatery close to the Sandeskhali police station – was alone on July 4 night. When she protested against the goons, who were drinking in the backyard of her shop, they left the spot. But later in the night, they came back and attacked her,” said her son.

One of the accused, Rajeswar Maiti, dragged her to the backyard where others were waiting. When she screamed, they forced themselves on her. “My mother told me there were four people but she could only recognize one,” the son said.

Inspector general of police (law and order) Anuj Sharma, however, said, “We are taking the matter seriously. One person, who was named in the FIR, was arrested. We are investigating the matter with utmost seriousness.”
