Kyrgyzstan to revise statistics on COVID-19 fatalities

Bishkek: Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Health, in accordance with the updated recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), has begun a review of previous fatalities, the press service of the Republican Headquarters for Combating COVID-19 reported.
Due to the fact that statistics on novel coronavirus are treated differently, the Ministry of Health explains the following:
The statistics use such indicators as “mortality rate” – estimates the number of deaths per 1 million, per 100,000, etc., and “case fatality rate” – the proportion of deaths from a certain disease of the total number of people who were diagnosed with the disease for a certain period.
Until the epidemic is stopped, it is difficult to talk about the lethality rate, as it is calculated only for those persons who already have the outcome of the disease (recovery or death), but preliminary estimates of scientists show that the average lethality is 2%.
The Kyrgyz Health Ministry notes that the published statistics record a certain day and a certain time, the data change dynamically. For correct comparison it is necessary to follow the principle of comparability, there is need to take into account the methods of approach to the definition of the case, some countries have combined the statistics, while others, on the contrary, only consider confirmed by laboratory. The Ministry of Health, in accordance with the WHO updated recommendations “Medical certification, ICD mortality coding, and reporting mortality associated with COVID-19” of June 7, 2020, initiated a review of previous fatalities. Therefore, revised statistics on coronavirus fatalities will be provided soon. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan added 278 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, bringing the total infections in the country to 40,455. Among the new cases 57 cases are laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 221 cases of pneumonia, Ainura Akmatova, the head of the public health care department of the country’s Health Ministry told a daily news briefing. – Agencies
