Indian virus cases surge to 5.4 mln

MUMBAI: India’s coronavirus case tally surged to 5.4 million as it added 92,605 new infections in the last 24 hours, data from the health ministry showed on Sunday.
The country has posted the highest single-day caseload in the world since early August, and lags behind only the United States, which has 6.7 million cases in terms of total infections.
A total of 1,113 people died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said, taking mortalities to 86,752, which is a relatively low 1.6% of all cases.
Moreover, The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India Sunday morning rose to 5,400,619, India’s federal health ministry said.
During the past 24 hours, 92,605 new cases were reported from across the country. Besides this 1,133 deaths were also recorded.
“The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across India is 5,400,619 and death toll is 86,752,” reads the information released by the ministry.
According to ministry officials, 4,303,043 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.
“The number of active cases in the country right now is 1,010,824,” the information released by the ministry further reads.
Meanwhile, 63,661,060 samples were tested so far across the country, out of which 1,206,806 tests were conducted on Saturday alone, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said Sunday.–Agencies
