BEIJING: Beijing’s elderly population is expected to increase in the coming years, with around 5 million people aged 60 or above by 2025, according to data released at a municipal press briefing Friday.
There were 3.71 million people in the national capital aged 60 or above by the end of 2019, accounting for about 17.2 percent of the city’s total population, said Sun Liguo, deputy head of the Beijing Association on Aging.
As of November 2020, the city had 544 elderly care centers with a total of 107,000 beds, while the number of medical institutions that are elderly-friendly has reached 253, according to Sun.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) period, the city will create a more age-friendly environment by improving elderly care services in neighborhoods, perfecting public facilities and infrastructure for the elderly, and promoting technological innovation in elderly healthcare, said Sun.
The average life expectancy of Beijing’s registered permanent residents reached 82.31 years in 2019. . –Agencies
