ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday said certain ‘anti-peace’ elements were active to play the role of spoilers and it is a test of Afghan leadership to cope with such challenges.In a statement released on Friday, Qureshi urged the Taliban and former Afghan rulers to seek an all-inclusive political structure after due consultations. He further stated, “no one wanted bloodshed in Afghanistan, but peace and stability”. The foreign minister assured that Pakistan was committed to pay a positive role in the ongoing situation, adding the Pakistani envoy was in contact with several Afghan leaders. The Afghan delegation, the minister said, during their recent visit to Islamabad had held talks with him as well as with Prime Minister Imran Khan. On the border situation, the minister said the neighbouring countries should hold consultations in this regard.
He also announced an official visit to neighbouring countries in the next few days to devise a comprehensive strategy after consultations. “Our aim is Afghanistan’s stability and we will continue our endeavours in this regard,” he remarked.
On August 16, Qureshi urged the Afghan leadership to ensure a broad-based and comprehensive political settlement of the Afghan issue. The minister called upon the stakeholders to work in a unified manner for a better future for the war-stricken country and the region. He emphasised that Pakistan wants a peaceful, united, democratic, stable and prosperous neighbour.
According to the minister, a comprehensive political dialogue is the only way to resolve the issue and added that Pakistan is committed to playing a constructive and reconciliatory role in this regard.
