PTI sweeps landmark NA by-polls

– Registers landslide victory over ruling alliance

– Secures 6 out of 8 NA seats, 2 out of 3 PA seats

– PML-N, JUI-F, ANP, MQM fail to win any seat

ISLAMABAD, LAHORE, KARACHI: PTI on Sunday swept landmark National and Punjab Assembly by-polls, securing 6 out of 8 NA seats and 2 out 3 Punjab Assembly seats, registering landslide victory over ruling alliance.

The polling began at 8:00 am and culminated at 5:00 pm.

According to unconfirmed and unofficial results, PTI is leading on five National Assembly seats and clinched victory in NA-31 Peshawar as PTI Chairman Imran Khan defeated ANP’s Ghulam Ahmed Bilour.

However, PPP has clinched NA-157 Multan-IV seat, where Ali Musa Gilani has defeated Meher Bano Qu­reshi, daughter of PTI leader Shah Mah­mood Qureshi.

There were eight National Assembly and three Punjab Assembly sets on which the by-elections were held on Sunday. The National Assembly constituencies were NA-22 (Mardan-III); NA-24 (Charsadda-II); NA-31 (Peshawar-V); NA-108 (Faisalabad-VIII); NA-118 (Nankana Sahib-II); NA-237 (Malir-II); NA-239, (Korangi), Karachi-I; and NA 157 (Multan-IV), while the provincial constituencies were PP-139 (Sheikhupura-V); PP-209 (Khanewal VII); and PP-241 (Bahawalnagar-V).

Acorrding  to unofficial results of National Assembly seats PTI Chairman Imran Khan defeated Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) candidate Muhammad Qasim in NA-22 Mardan-III. Imran defeated ANP’s Aimal Wali Khan in NA-24 Charsadda-II. PTI Chief also thrashed ANP candidate  Ghulam Ahmed Bilour in NA-31 Peshawar-V. Imran Khan also defeated PML-N’s leader, Nawaz Sharif’s nephew Abid Sher Ali in NA-108 Faisalabad.

PTI Chief also emerged victorious in NA-108 Faisalabad-VIII, defeating PML-N’s Shezra Mansab Ali.

Imran Khan thrashed MQM-Pakistan’s candidate Syed Nayer Raza in NA-239 Korangi, consider to be a stronghold of the party of losing candidate. However, Pakistan People’s Party candidates Abdul Hakeem Baloch in NA-237 Malir-II and Ali Musa Gillani in NA 157 Multan-IV managed to secure their seats.

Similarly in Punjab Provincial Assembly by-polls on three seats, PTI candidates secured seats at PP-209 Khanewal VII and PP-241 Bahawalnagar-V while PML-N candidate register victory in PP-139 Sheikhupura-V.

Final and official results were yet to be released by Election Commission of Pakistan till the filing of this report.
