Manufacturers call for concerted efforts to revitalise football industry: WealthPK

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Sports Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PSGMEA) has called for concerted efforts to revitalise the football industry in Sialkot.
The football industry in Sialkot has long been recognised as a significant contributor to the country’s economy and a source of pride for its skilled craftsmen, but recent challenges have led to a decline in this sector’s growth.
Secretary General of PSGMEA Mohsin Masood said while talking to WealthPK that increased global competition is posing a challenge to Sialkot’s football industry, leading to a decrease in business as other countries are producing products at lower costs, presenting a huge challenge to Sialkot’s traditional craftsmanship.
“Limited investment in research and development (R&D) has hindered the industry’s ability to keep up with technological advancements in football manufacturing. Embracing modern techniques and machinery is vital to ensuring efficiency, productivity, and competitive pricing,” he emphasised.
“Improving the visibility and positioning of Sialkot as a trusted and reliable football manufacturing hub is crucial to increasing demand,” he added.
PSGMEA plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration between various stakeholders in the football industry, including manufacturers, exporters, and relevant government bodies.
Mohsin opined that investing in the development of skilled labour is imperative. He said enhancing the training programs for workers will not only upgrade their knowledge, but also ensure the quality of products, thus driving market demand.
“Encouraging innovation through increased investment in R&D can modernise manufacturing processes and boost product quality. This will also promote the integration of smart technologies and enhance competitiveness in the global market,” Mohsin said.
Experts believe that the government should play an active role in supporting the football industry by streamlining regulations and providing incentives such as tax benefits, grants, and subsidies. This will attract investment and encourage entrepreneurs to explore new opportunities within the industry.
Building strong partnerships with international football brands and associations can provide added value to Sialkot’s products. Collaboration in design, technology transfer, and marketing can increase market accessibility and visibility in target markets.
Revitalising the football industry in Sialkot requires a collective effort from all stakeholders, as when this industry flourishes, it will not only contribute to the economy, but also uplift the spirits of skilled workers.
Sialkot city manufactures over 70% of the world’s footballs and was a major source of footballs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar. –INP
