Capital Cops form Minority Protection Unit

ISLAMABAD: In a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of minority communities, the Islamabad Capital Police has officially inaugurated the “Minority Protection Unit.”
This initiative comes as a result of the recommendations put forth by the National Minorities Commission, reflecting a commitment to safeguard the rights and well-being of minority individuals and places of worship.
Following the special directions of Islamabad Capital City Police Officer (ICCPO), Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan, the Minority Protection Unit has been established to uphold the safety and interests of minority communities.
The unit’s primary responsibility is to oversee and secure minority places of worship and communities throughout the capital. It will operate under the direct supervision of SSP Operations to ensure its effectiveness and efficiency.
The Minority Protection Unit will work closely with these committees to promptly address any challenges or concerns faced by the minority population. This approach aims to establish clear lines of communication and expedite the resolution of issues affecting minority individuals and communities. The newly formed unit is comprised of 70 dedicated personnel, including newly pass out officials, who will work tirelessly to uphold the safety and well-being of minority communities.
ICCPO Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan emphasized the crucial role of the police in safeguarding minority rights, mentioning that the Capital Police College’s curriculum now includes specific modules on minority rights and human rights protection. These modules are incorporated into training programs for both new recruits and officers participating in departmental promotion courses.
He further said that, the unit’s alignment with the recommendations of the National Commission on Minorities, affirming the Islamabad Capital Police’s commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for citizens.
Additionally, the Islamabad Capital Police will conduct awareness campaigns to educate the public about minority rights and ensure that minority representation is incorporated into peace committees at the police station level, he maintained.
