New Delhi: Two earthquakes struck western Nepal and some parts of India on Tuesday, causing inju-ries to 17 people, damaging homes, and triggering a landslide that blocked a major highway.
The quakes, with magnitudes of 6.3 and 5.3, occurred in the district of Bajhang, bordering India. The landslide that followed the earthquakes obstructed the road to the southern plains, according to Rama Acharya, an official from the interior ministry.
The epicentres of the earthquakes were located in Talkot and Chainpur, and they occurred approxi-mately 30 minutes apart. The tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi, India’s capital, prompting people to evacuate homes and office buildings as a precaution. There were no immediate reports of structural damage in New Delhi. Dipesh Chaudhary, a police official, reported that 17 individuals, including 11 women and six men, sus-tained injuries and were receiving medical treatment. One woman was reported missing after being engulfed by a landslide triggered by the quake. Narayan Pandey, the top district official, mentioned that one of the injured individuals was struck by a falling object, and some homes in the town of Chainpur collapsed as a result of the earthquakes. –Agencies
