TEHRAN: As many as eight people were killed after an Israeli airstrike hit the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capi-tal Damascus Monday, according to IRNA news agency as fears of conflict escalation in the Middle East ramp up, with thousands martyred in Gaza. Iranian news agency claimed that the Syrian Air Force also intercepted some of the Israeli missiles fired toward the embassy, whereas Sana reported that the “Zionist forces” targeted the Mezzeh neighbor-hood in Damascus.
Iranian diplomatic mission in Damascus including the ambassador and his family remained unharmed in the attack.
According to the Mehr news agency, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was also killed in the strike.
Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad contacted his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian and condemned the Israeli attack during his visit to the Embassy.
The strike caused massive damage to the nearby buildings along the targeted site.
The Israeli forces after the missile attack said: “We do not comment on reports in the foreign media.”
The attack comes as the occupied Israeli forces are continuing their brutality against the innocent Pal-estinians by bombing hospitals and opening gunfire on the food-starved residents of Gaza.
Last week, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire amid the Israeli ground operation that was triggered by Hamas’s response on October 7, 2023, to the decades-old Israeli oppression. –Agencies
