ISLAMABAD: In a heated session at the National Assembly on Monday, Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif stirred controversy by advocating for the imposition of Article 6 of the Constitution on former Field Marshal Ayub Khan, the grandfather of Opposition Leader in NA Omar Ayub.
Asif’s remarks came in response to Omar Ayub’s demand regarding constitutional provisions during his address.
Omar asserted that according to the Constitution, security agencies cannot engage in politics, emphasising that they were “instruments of the state, not the state itself.”
Omar, citing Article 6 of the Constitution, remarked that every institution has its boundaries, and if any exceed them, the country’s progress is hindered. He underscored the alarming decline of freedom of expression in the nation, highlighting the ban on X since February.
The opposition leader reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to democracy and the rule of law, pledging to persevere in their struggle until the final victory.
He also called for the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 events and February 8 elections. “Ayub Khan should be exhumed and Article 6 should be imposed on him,” Asif said. He condemned Ayub Khan’s actions, attributing him as the instigator of the country’s first martial law and a violator of the Constitution. “Ayub Khan was the first to violate the Constitution and overthrow a democratic government,” Asif proclaimed. “He is the root cause of all confusion and chaos.”
Asif, highlighting the sanctity of constitutional boundaries, reiterated, “I am in favour of imposing Article 6 on those who violate the Constitution.”
Khawaja Asif asserted that the transgressions committed during PTI’s tenure are unforgivable, suggesting that even ten generations seeking absolution wouldn’t suffice. “Those who flouted the Constitution ought to seek redemption,” he insisted.
Questioning the demand for contrition, Asif pointedly asked why they should seek forgiveness from individuals who desecrated memorials of the martyr and attacked the military. “I would sooner meet my demise than extend an apology to them,” he declared.
Asif highlighted the stark reversal of sentiment towards military figures, noting that those who once lauded the army chief and ISI chief now cast aspersions on their character. He alleged that General Bajwa played a pivotal role in securing Imran Khan’s ascent to power and was a staunch supporter of his.
Expanding on political affiliations, Asif acknowledged the historical ties between Gohar Ayub, father of Omar Ayub, and Nawaz Sharif, describing the latter as a figure of esteem whom he continues to hold in high regard.
Asif’s remarks faced staunch opposition from the opposing benches, with uproar and slogans dominating the parliamentary floor. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq intervened, ordering the removal of inappropriate remarks made by the opposition leader regarding state institutions.
Tensions simmered further as verbal clashes erupted between Khawaja Asif and opposition members. The situation eventually de-escalated following interventions from Ali Muhammad Khan and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry.
Subsequently, the session was adjourned till Tuesday, 11am.
