My unique experience at Communication University of China

By Gopolang Ditlhokwa

When I embarked on my PhD journey in communication at the Institute of Communication Studies at the Communication University of China (CUC) in 2021, I knew it would be challenging, but I did not anticipate just how deeply fulfilling and transformative the experience would become. Made possible by the fully-funded Chinese government scholarship, this has been life-changing, allowing me to completely focus on my studies without the burden of financial worries. It provides access to state-of-the-art dormitories with loving and welcoming dormitory staff. I am deeply thankful for this opportunity, which has enabled me to focus entirely on becoming a globally competitive scholar.
CUC is not just an institution; it is a place that promotes innovative ideas, collaboration, and a profound sense of community, all of which have shaped my academic and personal growth in ways I could not have imagined. My enrolled PhD program in communication is renowned for its intensity and rigor. The program specifically aims to push boundaries and equip students like me with the necessary skills to thrive in the competitive world of global academia. The dynamic curriculum from the outset not only deepened my understanding of communication theory and research, but also honed practical skills like academic publishing, cross-cultural communication, and effective knowledge dissemination.
The courses I have undertaken have been transformative, each contributing uniquely to my development. “Reading and Discussion of Classical Texts in Communication Studies,” for example, deepened my understanding of foundational theories, while “Methodologies in Communication Studies” provided me with the tools to conduct high-quality research.
“Chinese Language and Culture” introduced me to China’s rich heritage, enhancing my cross-cultural communication skills. In “Visual Communication,” I learned the power of images in shaping public perception, and “Chinese Media and Society” gave me a philosophical understanding of China’s media space and how it shapes its society. Courses like “Journalism and Communication” and “Academic Writing” honed my analytical and writing skills, which are critical for publishing research in global academic forums.
These courses are imperative for anyone aiming to make a meaningful contribution to communication studies on a global scale, and CUC provides these opportunities with unmatched excellence.
What truly sets CUC apart is its mission to cultivate media professionals who not only excel in their fields but also embody strong ethical principles. Upholding this mission, CUC has shown interest in not only accommodating Chinese citizens but also those of us who come from Africa and the rest of the world. Today, I count myself among those outstanding media and communication talents who will go a long way toward serving the world by confidently addressing future media challenges and excelling on the international stage. This guiding principle is integral to everything we do at the Institute of Communication Studies.
It is more than just acquiring knowledge; it is a commitment to shaping professionals who apply what they learn to real-world challenges and strive to make a positive impact on society. One of the most remarkable aspects of my experience here is the unwavering support system. The school, along with the administrative staff, are always available, whether for academic guidance or personal encouragement.
CUC truly goes above and beyond to ensure its students succeed. I recall countless instances when I needed advice or assistance, and the doors of my school were always open, with staff ready to provide both academic and moral support. We all feel genuinely cared for and empowered to achieve our best, making it feel less like a university and more like a home. Equally impactful has been the mentorship of my supervisor, Professor Li Jidong. Supervisors’ roles at CUC extend far beyond dissertation guidance. My supervisor has been instrumental in helping me to master research methodologies and develop my academic voice.
One of the proudest moments of my academic journey was seeing my name next to my supervisor’s on a research paper we published together. It was a moment of deep honor and pride, as well as an affirmation of CUC’s trust and faith in its students and their potential to contribute to cutting-edge research.
CUC’s PhD program in Communication is not just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about becoming part of an ongoing global dialogue in the field of media and communication studies. The cutting-edge nature of the program ensures that we are always at the forefront of new developments in media, research, and communication theory. We have access to state-of-the-art labs, expansive libraries, and collaborative research platforms, all of which enable us to contribute new and innovative ideas to the global knowledge economy.
Moreover, my time at CUC has exposed me to an incredibly diverse cohort of students. This multicultural environment promotes a sense of unity and a shared future, allowing us to learn from both our professors and each other’s different experiences. This global exposure remains the most enriching aspect of my journey because it has broadened my understanding of communication in various cultural contexts. Therefore, my time at CUC has been nothing short of transformative.
The combination of intensive academic training, the unwavering support from faculty and staff, and the privilege of working alongside Chinese-renowned scholars has given me the tools I need to contribute meaningfully to the field of communication.
The knowledge I have gained and the mentorship I have received are all treasured gifts that I will carry with me throughout my career. CUC is more than a university; it is a place that nurtures dreams, challenges limits, and empowers students to make their mark on the world. I am incredibly proud to be part of this esteemed institution.
My experience at the Institute of Communication Studies will always be a source of pride and gratitude as I continue my journey in the world of communication. Now, I can confidently say that CUC made me who I am.
