ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the need for an honest and non-political review of the tragic Swat incident, stating that such national tragedies require unity and seriousness, not point-scoring.
During a visit to the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC), the Prime Minister received a de-tailed briefing on the preparedness strategies for potential floods during the monsoon season. Offi-cials discussed proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and protect vulnerable com-munities.
In his address, the Prime Minister recalled the devastating 2022 floods that destroyed homes and standing crops, emphasising the critical role of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in raising awareness and coordinating relief efforts. Speaking on the recent tragedy in Swat, PM Sharif said, “We must rise above politics and assess the incident with sincerity. The nation mourns the loss of precious lives. All relevant institutions must work collectively to prevent such events in the future.”
He also warned that Pakistan’s adversaries might attempt to use water as a strategic weapon, reaf-firming the government’s commitment to thwart any such efforts.
“The Indus Waters Treaty cannot be unilaterally revoked,” he said, underlining the importance of safeguarding national water security.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited the embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Tuesday, where he expressed his profound condolences to the Iranian people and their government. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s sympathy and solidarity with Iran during the recent Israeli aggression against Iran. Prime Minister paid rich tributes to the resilience and courage of the Iranian nation while offering his prayers for those who had embraced martyrdom, as well as for the swift recovery of the injured.
At the occasion, he also signed the condolence book opened by the Iranian mission to honour the martyrs and injured Iranians during the recent Israeli aggression against Iran.
The PM was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, SAPM Tariq Fatemi and the foreign secretary, PM Office Media Wing said in a press release.
Upon his arrival at the embasy, prime minister was received by Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghaddam and his senior colleagues. While assuring the Iranian side of Pakistan’s consistent and continued support, prime minister also conveyed his good wishes and respects for Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, as well as for President Dr Massoud Pezeshkian.
