Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: A major railway accident was narrowly avoided today when the Green Line Express derailed near the Bakery Chowk area, shortly after departing from Rawalpindi Railway Station.
The incident occurred between Rawalpindi and Nur Junction when the locomotive and several coaches of the high-profile express train jumped the tracks. According to initial reports, the train was fortunately an “empty rake” at the time, meaning no passengers were on board, which prevented any loss of life or injuries.

Pakistan Railway officials and rescue teams reached the site immediately to secure the area.
Initial investigations suggest that the derailment was likely caused by a combination of poor track maintenance and overspeeding at a curve. Pakistan Railways has dispatched heavy machinery and a relief train from the Rawalpindi division to begin the clearing and restoration process.
