Freedom of press cornerstone of democracy, says Amir

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan, and SAFRON, and President of PML-N Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Engineer Amir Muqam, has said that World Press Freedom Day serves as a reaffirmation of the commitment to freedom of expression, access to information, and the promotion of democratic values.
In his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3, the minister noted that this day, first recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, is observed to pay tribute to the services and sacrifices of journalists worldwide.
“A free, responsible, and empowered media is the fundamental pillar of any democratic society, playing a key role in transparency, accountability, and public awareness,” Engineer Amir Muqam said.
The federal minister paid special tribute to the journalist community, particularly journalists from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that they are highlighting public issues with professional integrity despite difficult circumstances.
He stated that the federal government continues to take measures for the protection of journalists, the promotion of freedom of expression, and access to information.
In the current era, the importance of responsible journalism has increased significantly in the face of challenges posed by fake news and unverified information.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue its efforts for the protection of press freedom and the rights of journalists.
