The march of civilization over the last few centuries has led to immense technological developments. Today’s man is largely dependent on the most modern form of machines including the quickest and highly advanced modes of transport and communication.
Although many people choose to drive automobiles rather than riding bicycles, there is still a sizeable amount of population who prefer to use bicycle. Bicycle is a non-motorized form of transportation that can greatly reduce air and noise pollution, can slow down global climate change and if encouraged properly, can be a step towards health sustainability.
This versatile human-powered vehicle is extensively useful even in the modern world of today because of its benefits with respect to transportation, physical exercise, recreation and sports activity. Medical specialists recommend the use of bicycle for body fitness on account of reducing the risk of heart diseases which are a subsequent result of today’s busy lifestyles.
Therefore the UN General Assembly has designated 3rd June as World Bicycle Day. This is a day when cities can rethink about the health friendly and cost effective means of transport particularly during the times of emergency lockdowns, austerity driven situations and pandemics like COVID-19. In short, bicycle day is being marked to highlight the significance of a bicycle as the easiest and cheapest way of capturing freedom, thrill, health and grit of life on two wheels.
