Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force has claimed it shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the eastern Strait of Hormuz using what it described as a new advanced air-defence system.
The claim was reported by Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, which did not provide further details on the alleged downing or the US response.
The reported incident comes amid a sharp escalation around the Strait of Hormuz, following a US strike on Iranian launchers on Larak Island and Iran’s subsequent attacks on US positions in Jordan.
Iran has previously claimed to have shot down US MQ-9 drones during the conflict, including one over Hormozgan province earlier this month.
