KARACHI: A court on Friday handed over the main accused, Konain Ali Gohar Shah, to the police on a three-day physical remand in connection with the al-leged assault on University of Karachi Islamic Learning Department Chairman Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi and his nephew.
Judicial Magistrate and Civil Judge Malir No. 10 announced the reserved verdict and granted police physical remand of the accused for three days.
Police arrested Konain Ali Gohar Shah on Thursday after he allegedly remained on the run and moved from one location to another while keeping his mobile phone switched off, officials said.
Meanwhile, another case has been registered against Konain Shah for allegedly threaten-ing Prof Saqi.
According to the FIR, obtained by ARY News, the case was registered on the complaint of Prof Dr Muhammad Arif Khan Saqi at Sachal police station under provisions relating to criminal intimidation and the Telegraph Act.
According to the complaint, Prof Saqi received a WhatsApp call on September 10 at around 2pm. The caller allegedly identified himself as Konain Shah and threatened the professor, demanding that he withdraw the case registered against him.
The FIR states that Prof Saqi refused to withdraw the case, following which Konain alleg-edly became angry and threatened to kill him if he did not withdraw the complaint.
The professor subsequently requested legal action against Konain Shah.
Earlier, Prof Saqi said he had rejected a compromise offer made by the father of the main accused in the assault case.
Ali Gohar Shah, father of Konain Shah, had visited Prof Saqi’s residence along with several community members and attempted to broker a settlement, according to the professor.
“I have refused to compromise,” Prof Saqi said, adding that Ali Gohar Shah was elderly and had visited him despite being unwell.
“Our fight is not against any political party but against the culture of hooliganism,” he said.
Prof Saqi said his personal interests were secondary and stressed the need to protect the dignity and status of teachers.
“A teacher is a permanent institution and a symbol of respect. Teachers are respected across the world,” he said, adding that he wanted the dignity and status of teachers to be restored.
