BEIJING: The ongoing two sessions in China have drawn widespread attention at home and abroad. In a rare move on March 4, the People’s Daily published a series of microblog messages on its Sina Weibo, reminding lawmakers and political advisers attending the annual sessions to fulfill their duties in the form of poetry.
Please remember,
It’s your solemn right to vote “yes” or “no”.
A right granted to the people, by the people.
Please remember,
Your incompetence excludes the people from participation.
Not speaking up is denying the people their voice.
Please remember,
Less empty talk and more frank advice.
Less shock and more common sense.
Less flash and more modesty.
Please remember,
Don’t be a “three-handed” deputy – shaking hands upon arrival, raising a hand when voting and clapping hands when a proposal is passed.
Please remember,
You do not embody the people’s democracy by simply clapping and nodding.
Seriously question the government and do not avoid controversial discussions.
Please remember,
You are not studying the government work reports,
You are considering and criticizing them.
Please remember,
You came to Beijing to participate in government supervision, Not to receive orders and express loyalty for the government.
Please remember,
What you do influences the path of China’s democratic politics.
Your actions reflect China.
Deputies and representatives,
Please bring your intelligence, courage and sense of responsibility.
Please remember,
Your participation today is not an honor, but a duty.
