NEW DELHI: Former judge of Indian Supreme Court, Justice Markandey Katju has said that India has sowed the seeds for large-scale guerilla war in occupied Kashmir by stripping the territory of its special status.
Justice Markandey Katju who has also served Press Council of India as its chairman in an article in international magazine The Week wrote that Kashmir would soon become what Vietnam was for the French and the Americans, Afghanistan for the Russians and Spain for Napoleon. Referring to the Kashmiris’ will for freedom, he pointed out that an army can fight another army, but it cannot fight the masses. He further said that a tiger can kill an antelope, but it cannot kill a swarm of mosquitoes.
In New Delhi, instead of taking a clear-cut stand against encroachment on fundamental rights of the residents in occupied Kashmir, the Supreme Court of India has observed that personal liberty of individuals needs to be balanced against the concerns of national security. The remark was made by a three-member bench of Justices NV Ramana, R Subhash Reddy and BR Gavai while hearing a petition relating to the media and communications blackout in occupied Kashmir. The petition was filed by the editor of Kashmir Times, Anuradha Bhasin.
Meanwhile, US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a post shared on Twitter said the blockade on communication and life-saving medical care in occupied Kashmir must end. She expressed support for the people of occupied Kashmir.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is among a group of progressive US congresswomen popularly known as “The Squad”, said, we stand for the basic human dignity of Kashmiris and support democracy, equality, and human rights for all – including the most vulnerable.
