Karachi: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has postponed the Asia Cup 2020 following the current situation due to COVID-19.
ACC, after the Executive Board meeting, decided to postpone the Asian event following the increasing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. ACC is hopeful that the tournament will be held in 2021 and is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same.
After careful consideration and evaluating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Executive Board of the ACC has decided to postpone the Asia Cup tournament that was scheduled for September 2020.
“From the onset, the Board was keen on organizing the tournament as per the original schedule. However, travel restrictions, country-specific quarantine requirements, fundamental health risks, and social distancing mandates have posed as substantial challenges to the holding of the Asia Cup,” ACC said in a statement.
“Conducting the event in a responsible manner remains the priority of the ACC and the Board is hopeful that the tournament will be held in 2021. The ACC is currently working towards securing June 2021 as a suitable window for the same,” the statement added.
Remember, the BCCI already confirmed that the multi-national tournament will not be happening this year. Asia Cup 2020 is canceled,” BCCI chief was quoted saying.
Whereas, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) waited for the final verdict from the ACC. “We are still waiting for the ACC to come back to us. They are making inquiries about certain (things). Maybe, Sourav knows something that I don’t know. That’s possible. But we have not heard anything from the ACC, so I can’t comment on that,” PCB chairman Ehsan Mani stated after Ganguly’s claims.
On the other hand, the ACC has confirmed that PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have swiped the hosting rights of the Asia Cup. Now, Sri Lanka will host next year’s event whereas Pakistan will host Asia Cup 2022.
