Sydney: Australia have defeated South Africa by five runs in the rain-affected second semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
South Africa had to chase the adjusted total of 98 in 13 overs but the Proteas managed to make 92 for the loss of five wickets. Earlier, the home side was put in to bat. Australia finished on a score of 134-5 in 20 overs.
Skipper Meg Lanning, the notable scorer, made 49 in as many balls which included four fours and a six. Dan van Niekerk, Proteas’ captain claimed figures of 3-19.
Australia rattled the South African top order and had them on the ropes at 3-24 but Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt made a strong come back and reached 66-3 after 10 overs.
Australia bowlers in the last three overs hold their nerve and restrict the visitors. The kangaroos will now face India on March 8th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in front of a big crowd.
