ISLAMABAD: Speaker of National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said that Labour Day is a recognition of the dignity, struggle and pivotal contribution of the working class in the progress of the country.
He said that labourers constitute the backbone of society and without their hard work and commitment, progress and prosperity cannot be achieved. Ayaz Sadiq said Labour Day recalls the historic struggle of workers in Chicago, who rendered great sacrifices for the attainment of fundamental rights, fair wages, reasonable working hours and safe working conditions.
He said that Parliament reaffirms its firm resolve for the welfare, rights and dignity of the working class and remains committed to strengthening legislative and policy measures in this regard. Ayaz Sadiq said Islam accords great dignity to labour and the rights of workers have been strongly emphasized in the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Timely payment of wages, he said, is a religious, moral and social responsibility.
He said that it is the responsibility of the state to ensure safe working conditions, fair wages, social protection and access to health and education facilities for workers.
Ayaz Sadiq stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy including skill development, vocational training and improved employment opportunities, saying an empowered workforce is the key to a strong and prosperous Pakistan.
Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah said that the working class is a vital pillar of the economy and sustainable development cannot be achieved without ensuring their welfare.
He called for collective efforts to safeguard workers’ rights, improve living standards and ensure socio-economic stability, adding that Labour Day reminds us that a just and prosperous society is built on the dignity and protection of workers.
