Rawalpindi: Pakistan men’s team captain Babar Azam, who became only the fifth Pakistan to claim series win in his debut series as captain, has aimed to assert his authority in Test series on away tours.
The 26-year-old Babar led Pakistan to a 2-0 sweep over the Proteas in Rawalpindi on Monday in a hard-fought 95-run win on the final day of the second Test.
“We have won at home, but we now need to win on away tours. I am sure that as time will pass, we will do that. We lost in New Zealand and there were so many negative things said, but I am sure that now people will back us,” Babar said a virtual presser. “It was a much-needed win and the best part of this series win is that now we are number five in Test rankings,” he added.
Meanwhile, Babar urged critics to stay patient in for the results as it takes time to build a new team. “It will take time because it’s a new team. I am a new captain and we have made some changes to the squad,” he said.
“When you win it lifts your confidence and I am sure this win against South Africa will give us improvement,” he added.
Babar reiterated that this series win is a good sign but still there’s a lot of room for improvement. “It’s a welcome sign but we have to further improve.” Babar hailed Hasan Ali who took 10 wickets in the match and took the game away from the visitors.
“Hassan Ali’s comeback after one year, showed a lot of character. It was outstanding from Hassan because he has game-awareness and he took full advantage of the experience he has of playing here,” he maintained.
Note, both teams will now lock horns in a three-match T20I series at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore from February 11.
