BEIJING: Chinese officials from different governmental departments on Monday told reporters about the achievements of socialist democracy during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).
Song Rui, deputy secretary-general of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), said that the people’s congress system has further matured during the period. Since March 2021, the NPC and its Standing Committee have passed 35 laws, adopted 62 legislative amendments, and approved 34 binding resolutions, Song said.
Song noted that these legislative efforts have improved China’s legal system by enhancing state governance, addressing public demands for a better life, and strengthening safeguards for national security.
A total of 127 draft laws have been released for public consultation since March 2021, attracting over 1.19 million comments from more than 400,000 people, the official added.
Hu Henglu, deputy secretary-general of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that the CPPCC organized 279 consultative meetings, including thematic standing committee sessions and special consultations during the five-year period. It also conducted 413 inspection tours and research projects and processed 25,043 proposals, many of which were adopted into policy measures, Hu added.
Ma Lihuai, deputy director of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that the department made remarkable achievements during the period.
“By properly balancing unity and diversity, promoting democracy, and respecting differences with inclusiveness, we have fostered greater harmony in relations between political parties, ethnic groups, religions, social strata and compatriots at home and abroad,” Ma said.
“These efforts have gathered extensive wisdom and strength for advancing Chinese modernization.”
Duan Yijun, vice director of the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, said that from 2020 to 2024, the combined regional GDP of China’s five autonomous regions grew from 6.01 trillion yuan (around $837 billion) to 8.38 trillion yuan. –The Daily Mail-CGTN news exchange item
