China-Pakistan TCM-TUM meeting held to foster Food-Medicine Synergy

NINGBO: “Unani medicine, a widely practiced traditional healing system in Pakistan, possesses profound potential for synergistic collaboration with TCM, encompassing both research endeavors and commercial applications. It is crucial to integrate these two venerable healing modalities, fostering mutual learning and exchange, thereby contributing significantly to the enhancement of healthcare in both nations,”highlighted Prof. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Academician and Vice President TWAS/Coordinator General COMSTECH/UNESCO Chair/Distinguished National Professor, Karachi University.
Emphazing the immense contribution of the two traditional medicine systems, which have benefited over 2 billion people across four continents, Prof. Choudhary also highlighted the commonalities between TCM and TUM, their potential in global trade and the prospects of bilateral research and development cooperation in developing novel therapies and functional foods from herbal sources.
“TCM has gained widespread recognition in Pakistan as an evidence-based medicine,” he noted. “Sino-Pakistan Cooperation Centre on Traditional Chinese Medicine (SPCCTCM) has led to the joint training of young Pakistani researchers, fostered industrial linkages between the two nations, and established several centers for traditional medicine and food-medicine convergence, attracting participation from top Chinese institutions and universities.”
The above remarks were made at the 2024 China-Pakistan TCM-TUM Meeting on Research and Development (R&D) of Food and Medicine Homologous Products convened at Ningbo University held on May 21, aiming to strengthen cooperation in the modernization and global integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Traditional Unani Medicine (TUM), particularly in the realm of herbal-based food and medicine products. –Agencies
