NEW YORK: China’s envoy to the United Nations (UN) said that China firmly supports any efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue, urging for concerted efforts in preserving peace in the Middle East region.
Speaking at a plenary meeting of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, China’s permanent representative to the UN Zhang Jun said that the Palestinian issue, as a core issue in the Middle East, bears on regional peace and stability, on international equity and justice, and on human conscience and morality.
Zhang said that the turbulent situation in the Middle East region is deeply concerning, and China is against any acts that could destabilize the region.
In solving the issues, the Chinese envoy pointed out that the international community should adhere to the two-state solution while Palestine and Israel should follow the path of peaceful negotiations, avoiding steps that could escalate tensions. The Chinese envoy stressed that China will continue to make efforts in safeguarding international equity and justice and facilitating peace and stability in the Middle East region.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Ishtaye on Wednesday called on the donor countries to take more serious measures to boycott the Israeli settlements. “The real situation is deteriorating due to Israel’s policies of expanding settlements in the Palestinian territories,” Ishtaye told an online meeting of international donors. A press statement, issued by Ishtaye’s office in Ramallah, said that he told the meeting “due to these policies, the Palestinian land is shrinking, settler violence is escalating, and the access to our resources decreases daily.”
