BEIJING: Containment and suppression cannot hold back China’s development but only strengthen its resolve and capability to seek self-reliance and technological innovation, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
The ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association President John Neuffer’s claim in an interview with Bloomberg that the U.S. chip industry still needs China despite its government’s “national security” concern, as China is the biggest market for the U.S. chip companies.
In fact, China is the world’s largest semiconductor market, Mao said, adding that imposing decoupling on China disrupts market behavior and is not in the interest of any party.
She noted that in its pursuit of primacy, the U.S. has overstretched the concept of national security and abused export control measures to limit exports to China.
The U.S. not only suppresses and contains China, but also intends to deprive all developing countries’ rights to realize scientific and technological progress so that they remain at the lower end of the industrial chain, she added. Calling such practices “self-serving” and “unfair,” Mao said they will not only undermine the stability of the global production and supply chain, which is not conducive to the world’s economic growth, but will also backfire eventually on the U.S. itself.
