BEIJING: Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China supports an “Afghan-led and Afghan-owned” reconciliation framework among various forces in Afghanistan as he met with his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Haneef Atmar in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Wang said the hasty withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces has intensified the security threats in Afghanistan, and the urgent priority is to prevent a civil war, restart internal negotiation and crackdown on terrorism.
Wang also stressed that Taliban must not have any links with terrorist organizations.
He said China will not interfere with the internal issues in Afghanistan and has no geopolitical calculation about the region.
Wang added that China will continue to treat Afghanistan with respect to its sovereignty and independence.
China will also provide vaccines and other medical support to Afghanistan until it fully defeats COVID-19.
Atmar said he “fully agrees” with Wang’s remarks and thanked China’s support.
Afghanistan expects to bring bilateral cooperation in areas including politics, economy and security to enter a new stage, noted Atmar.
He vowed to further boost security collaboration with China, including jointly fighting terrorist organizations such as Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement.
