Chinese Envoy urges immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions

BEIJING: A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for the immediate lifting of all unilateral sanctions imposed by certain countries, criticizing these actions as illegal under the international law and the UN Charter. These sanctions, the envoy warned, not only deepen the economic and social hardships of targeted nations but also risk sparking new conflicts and instability.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, made these remarks during a Security Council open debate on peacebuilding and conflict prevention. He emphasized that effective conflict prevention requires a favorable external environment, which is undermined by such sanctions.
Fu urged the UN to enhance its support for development, particularly through peacekeeping operations and special political missions that should prioritize the economic growth and sustainable development of the countries they assist.
He also highlighted the crucial role of regional organizations in fostering political trust and regional cooperation.
The envoy stressed the need for an open, non-discriminatory international economic and trade environment, allowing developing countries to participate fairly in global economic, scientific and technological cooperation. He also advocated for reforms in the international financial system to better serve the needs of developing nations, particularly in areas like development financing, climate change and capacity building.
Fu condemned unilateralism and interference in other countries’ internal affairs, reiterating China’s stance against hegemony. He emphasized that the imposition of unilateral sanctions by some nations not only exacerbates existing difficulties but also plants the seeds for future conflicts.
Addressing the broader global situation, Fu noted the increasing turmoil in some regions and its spillover effects, calling for enhanced conflict prevention measures that address both symptoms and root causes. He argued that poverty and underdevelopment are major sources of conflict, making poverty reduction and development essential tasks for achieving lasting peace. –The Daily Mail-CGTN news exchange item
