BEIJING: A young woman in Yunnan province has captured the hearts of netizens with her social media posts showcasing her work as a pig farm caretaker.
Zhou, a post-95s generation graduate identified only by her surname, began documenting her daily routine at the farm on Douyin, a popular video-sharing platform, in 2023. Her affectionate nickname among her growing fanbase is “pig nanny”.
The videos feature Zhou interacting with piglets and providing them care, attracting viewers who find her work endearing. Many have expressed admiration and even inquired about potential job opportunities at the farm.
Zhou, as she prefers to be called, has been working at the pig farm for over two years. After graduating with a degree in Chinese language and literature, she tried various jobs before a friend introduced her to the farm. Now, she embraces her role. “It’s an eight-hour shift with a monthly salary of around 5,000 yuan ($695),” Zhou said, detailing her responsibilities. These include animal husbandry, treatment, and caring for piglets, including night shifts during birthing periods.
Initially, Zhou’s family and neighbors struggled to understand her choice, associating pig farming with dirt and unpleasant smells. However, she emphasizes that modern pig farms are a far cry from these stereotypes. Her family has gradually accepted her career path.
