ISLAMABAD: The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Co. (SECMC) won the Energy Globe Award 2022 from Pakistan by the globally-recognized institution, the “Energy Globe” – The World Award for Sustainability.
It was disclosed by SECMC in a post on Tuesday. SECMC is the operator of the first coal mine in Thar desert in Sindh province, which is among the early-harvest projects under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project has achieved a capacity of 7.6 million tons of coal per annum, which produces 1,320 megawatts of low-cost electricity through four mine-mouth power plants of 330MWs each.
SECMC received this prestigious environmental award in recognition of its Thar Million Trees program that aims at contributing towards sustainability and playing an integral role in environmental conservation and preservation initiatives in the remote region of Thar, the company said.
According to the company, the “Energy Globe” Award was presented by Trade Commissioner of Pakistan Johannes Brunner on November 21, in cooperation with their partners, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
SECMC said that “Energy Globe” – The World Award for Sustainability, is one of the most renowned environmental prizes worldwide and more than 180 nations participate in the implemented projects.
SECMC is a joint venture between the Government of Sindh, Engro Energy Ltd. and its partners, and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC). Houlinhe Open Pit Coal Mine, subsidiary of State Power International, Mengdong (SPIM), has joined SECMC board as strategic investor with the total preference shares’ subscription, according to the company’s website.
CMEC and China East Resources Import and Export Corporation are the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors of the project.
