CUC & Me: A Journey of Transformation

By Usman Umer, Pakistan

My admission to the Communication University of China (CUC) was a fortunate leap into a wonderful, unknown place. My decision to study in China and journey proved a healthy transition that shaped my life and worldview profoundly. My delightful experiences during my stay in China transformed my unfounded perceptions about Chinese and imprinted in my mind a new appreciation of Chinese culture and traditions. I got the opportunity to have a broader understanding of the world beyond national borders. I never anticipated the profound personal development I encountered there.
I was amazed at the inspiring energy and scale of the bustling CUC campus the moment I arrived there. A sprawling urban landscape snuggles the university. It is a vivacious center of cultural exchange and academic activities. It became immediately apparent that the student body here is diverse and rich for cultural learning and exchange. Foreign students from various countries were there to pursue their higher education.
My experience at CUC encompasses numerous aspects, each of which holds significance from various perspectives. One such experience was the opportunity to immerse myself in Chinese culture. Chinese culture is deeply rooted in Eastern principles, making it a culture that any Easterner can embrace without experiencing any identity crisis. The university offered a broad spectrum of cultural activities ranging from academic courses to entertainment and sports. Engagement in these activities enabled me to understand Chinese thought and customs. Chinese nation’s emphasis on harmony, integrity, discipline, diligence, and family particularly fascinated me.
The sense of security I felt upon entering Chinese territory was perhaps the most striking and telling experience. I had flown from Pakistan, virtually a security state, where terrorism is still prevalent. In China, I felt that I had entered a true sovereign state where one is never worried about security issues. Surveillance cameras and digital networking allowed me to forget about the thoughts of theft or snatching of my belongings, irrespective of time and location. I could leave my Mac and iPhone unattended at my desk without worrying about their displacement. Everyone is safe and secure in China.
The academic routine and activities at CUC were all enriching. Foreign and national-qualified specialist instructors instructed international students in comprehensive academic courses. The challenging curriculum became rewarding because of supportive and dedicated faculty. The professors kept abreast of their subjects and consistently motivated their students to engage in critical thinking and carry out comprehensive independent research. The professors showed no discrimination between native and international students. Their politeness and encouraging and inspiring behavior forged everlasting learning relationships between them and me. The library was another wonderful site on the CUC campus. The state-of-the-art library was filled with old and new books on all subjects from around the world. Wi-fi access was free to all students. That library was a cool and calm place, always full of scholars seeking updated knowledge. Book reading may be a clue to China’s national progress, I guess.
As a student at CUC, I was fortunate enough to witness China’s commitment and dedication to environmental sustainability.
Lush green spaces, green parks, green and clean energy, and innovative traffic management are the green indicators of China’s ecological consciousness and volition to reduce carbon emissions. To promote sustainable transportation and reduce congestion, they have designed innovative traffic plans. Their plans and strategies for environmental preservation are really impressive.
Chinese respect for Pakistan and Pakistanis is a standout feature. Even a layperson knows one thing or another about Pakistan and Pakistanis. Every Chinese knows that Pakistan and China are true friends. Chinese shopkeepers and vendors often offered me special discounts when they would come to know that I was from Pakistan. Hard work and struggle are in-built Chinese characteristics. They never give up. They routinely exercise and go to the gym to maintain a healthy and balanced life.
Of course, my experience in China will not be complete without remembering incredible Chinese cuisine. Being a Muslim, I was concerned about Halal food, but it turned out to not be a major issue. Halal food can be found in certain trusted establishments that serve all Chinese dishes. Every meal, from spicy Sichuan hot pots to delicate Cantonese dim sum, was a culinary adventure. But Peking duck stood out above the rest. It was love at first bite, crispy from outside, tender from inside, served with pancakes, scallions, and hoisin sauce.
My life and studies in China stand as a unique and unforgettable experience. Social transformation and rapid economic development in China are evident everywhere. Modern infrastructure and bustling cities are really amazing. Chinese people’s adaptability and resilience are immensely impressive. They were incredibly hardworking, optimistic, and resourceful despite the challenges they faced.
China also broadened my perspective on the world. I learned how to appreciate and live with the diversity of cultures and perspectives. Also, I developed a greater understanding of global issues. The exposure to different ways of living and thinking challenged my preconceived notions and forced me to question my own assumptions. During my time at CUC, I also grew in person. I became more independent, confident, and adaptable. The academic and personal challenges that I faced helped me develop resilience and problem-solving skills. I made lifelong friends who have enriched my life in a multitude of ways.
When I look back on my time at CUC in particular and in China generally, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences I had there. It was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth that shaped my intellectual orientation and steered my career choices. I am grateful for the impact that this experience has had on my life.
My time in China was a truly unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression. From its commitment to environmental sustainability to its incredible cuisine, China is a country that has something to offer everyone. If you are considering studying abroad, I highly recommend adding CUC to your list. You will not regret it!
