ISLAMABAD: JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday assured journalists of his full support regarding the controversial PECA Bill issue.
During his visit to the parliamentary reporters’ office in the Parliament House, Maulana Fazlur Rehman met with reporters, emphasizing the deep connection between politics and journalism. He expressed that the two spheres have always been intertwined. Reaffirming his commitment regarding the PECA Bill issue, Maulana Fazlur Rehman acknowledged the importance of maintaining mutual respect and understanding between parliamentarians and journalists.
He pointed out that laws are crafted with specific contextual circumstances in mind, but over time, their relevance may diminish, especially referencing the situation during the 26th Amendment.
He reiterated his stance on the PECA law, emphasizing that journalists should have been involved in the decision-making process and their suggestions taken into account. The President, he noted, should have sought the opinions of journalists and media organisations before proceeding.
The JUI-F leader further shared that he had urged the President not to sign the law and to schedule a meeting with journalists. He added that President Asif Ali Zardari had said that he would speak to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for further dialogue.
