FIA initiates major crackdown against illicit currency racket

–Owner, staff of money exchangers booked on spot

ISLAMABAD: In face of the compilations of FATF, at the special directives of DG FIA Dr.Sanaullah Abbasi, action was taken against the commercial banking circle of Islamabad Zone.

At a secret tip, under the supervision of FIA Islamabad Zone commercial banking circle’s in-charge Deputy Director Ahmad Rizwan Khan, a special 7 member team was formed which included SI Nadeem Akhtar Awan, SI Afshan Noreen, SI Arbab Farooq, ASI Jawad Ahmad Talha, ASI Muhammad Rauf Siddique, Head Constable Nayyar and Constable Adnan Khan.

The given team raided Umar International Money Changer Franchise H&H Currency Exchange Company, Blue Area, Madni Plaza. The raid was administered following all legal protocals and the team remained at the place for 5 hours straight. The entire action was also video recorded and carefully undertaken with regard to the evidence at place.

Thus, the owner and employees of Umar International Money Changer Franchise, H&H Currency Exchange Company Limited, were arrested for illicit sale and purchase of foreign currency.

Muhammad Besharat were caught red-handed while hunt us on for Shahid Uzair Khan. Currency was being bought and sold at the company without any formal receipt or record. A total local and foreign currency worth Rs.5 Crores was recovered from the branch which included American Dollars, Saudi Riyal, British Pounds, Yuro and Turkish Lira, Russian Rubel, Iran Riyal and UAE’s Dirham. Over 50 tola gold was also recovered from the place.

The recovered currency and gold had no record or receipt whatsoever in the branch. The currency and gold was thus confiscated and a case registered against the accused while further investigation is underway in this regard. Furthermore, Director Waqar Ahmad Chohan has warned that strict action would be taken against companies involved in illegal sale and purchase of currency.
