CHARIKAR: At least 70 people were killed and over 100 others wounded after torrential floods hit Afghanistan’s nine eastern provinces during Tuesday night, authorities said Wednesday.
Some 66 people were killed and 90 others wounded in the worst-hit Parwan province, provincial government spokesperson Wahida Shahkar told media. More than 300 houses and two shops were destroyed in Parwan, and parts of provincial capital Charikar city was also affected by the floods in the region, 55 km north of Kabul, she said, adding wide areas of arable lands have been washed out during the overnight floods.
An elderly woman and an adult male lost their lives and four others wounded in Nangarhar province, the provincial government confirmed in a statement. Other casualties took place in Kapisa, Panjshir, Wardak, Logar, Paktia, Paktika, and Nuristan provinces.
The State Minister for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Affairs Ghulam Bahauddin Jilani heading a group of officials visited Parwan early Tuesday morning.
He ordered provincial officials of the disaster agency to provide shelters and support to affected people in the nine provinces, particularly in the hard-to-reach districts at the earliest time.
The eastern Afghan provinces are not safe from the seasonal heavy rains, resulting in flash floods that damage infrastructures and agricultural lands.
