A 50-year-old man, who was attacked allegedly by a group of cow vigilantes accusing him of transporting cows for slaughter four days ago, died of his injuries at a hospital in Alwar district of Rajasthan. He was one of the five persons who were thrashed even as they produced documents showing that they had purchased the cattle.
The deceased, Pehlu Khan, was returning to Nuh in Haryana with his fellow cattle rearers after purchasing cows from Jaipur and nearby areas. Activists owing allegiance to the Hindu Jagaran Manch and Bajrang Dal stopped their vehicles near Behror on the Jaipur-Delhi national highway last Saturday.
After heated exchanges, the mob allegedly thrashed the travellers and damaged their vehicles. When the police arrived at the spot, Pehlu Khan and four others were lying on the road with injuries.
They were taken to a nearby private hospital and Pehlu Khan, who was in a critical condition, was shifted to the hospital’s intensive care unit. He died late on Monday night. His body has since been handed over to his next of kin after autopsy.
Police are yet to make any arrest in the case of Pehlu Khan’s death, though the cattle rearers from Haryana have been booked under the Rajasthan Bovine Animals (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995.
