Heavy rain predicted in twin cities on weekend

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Friday forecast more rain-wind/thundershower in Islamabad, the Potohar region, upper Punjab, Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan during the night, with isolated heavy rainfall also expected at a few places.
According to the PMD forecast, similar weather conditions are likely to persist on Saturday, with rain-wind/thundershower expected in upper and central Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely during the period, while hot and humid weather would prevail in other parts of the country.
The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall during the weekend could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore. There is also a risk of flash flooding in local streams and nullahs of Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat and Islamabad-Rawalpindi.
It further warned of landsliding in mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.
In Islamabad and adjoining areas, partly cloudy weather accompanied by rain-wind/thundershower is expected, with heavy rainfall also likely during the period.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain-wind/thundershower with isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Chitral, Battagram, Buner, Khyber, Bajaur, Mohmand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Peshawar, Hangu, Orakzai, Kurram, Kohat, Karak, Bannu, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan and Waziristan.
In Punjab, rain-wind/thundershower with isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Jhelum, Mangla, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Okara. During evening and night, similar weather is expected in Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Mianwali, Layyah, Bhakkar, Khushab, Noorpur Thal, Chiniot and Dera Ghazi Khan.
The other districts of the province are likely to experience hot and humid weather.
Most districts of Sindh are expected to remain hot and humid, while partly cloudy weather is likely in coastal areas. In Balochistan, hot and humid weather is forecast in most districts, with rain-wind/thundershower expected in Musa Khel, Zhob, Khuzdar and adjoining areas during evening and night.
Cloudy weather with rain-wind/thundershower is expected in Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, while heavy rainfall is also likely in Kashmir.
During the past 24 hours, rain-wind/thundershower occurred in Islamabad, the Potohar region, northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, with heavy rainfall at a few places, while hot and humid weather prevailed in other parts of the country.
Islamabad received the highest rainfall in the country, with 61 millimetres recorded at Golra, 36mm at Bokra, 35mm at Zero Point, 12mm at Saidpur and 1mm at the airport. Rawalpindi received 51mm at Shamsabad, 35mm at Kattarian, 29mm at Pirwadhai, 26mm at Gawalmandi and 14mm at Kachehri. Murree received 26mm, Mandi Bahauddin 5mm, Sialkot 4mm at the city and 1mm at the airport, Jhang 3mm, Narowal 2mm, Malam Jabba 33mm, Balakot 3mm and Astore 5mm.
The highest maximum temperatures recorded during the last 24 hours were 46 degrees Celsius at Nokundi and Dalbandin, and 43C at Dadu.
The minimum and maximum temperatures recorded were: Islamabad 23-32C, Lahore 28-36C, Karachi 26-32C, Peshawar 26-36C, Quetta 23-39C, Gilgit 22-36C, Muzaffarabad 24-36C, Skardu 19-31C, Murree 15-21C, Faisalabad 27-38C and Multan 29-37C.
