‘History repeats itself’: Iran recalls defeat of Roman Empire in stark message

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei invoked a historic Persian victory over the Roman Empire on Sunday, saying history repeats itself for those who fail to learn from it.

In a post on X, Baqaei referenced the 53 BC Battle of Carrhae, where General Surena defeated the Roman legions despite commanding a smaller force. He said the battle shattered “the myth of Roman invincibility forever” and ended Rome’s ambitions of expanding eastward.

“Throughout history, Iranians have stood not only against single invaders, but against powerful ‘pluses’ and grand ‘legionnaires’ — and have always emerged with honor,” he wrote.

“History repeats itself — for those who refuse to study it or respect its lessons.” –Agencies
