HONG KONG: Launched to show the contributions of powerful female figures, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is going to hold over 100 activities to celebrate both the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the 24th anniversary of the city’s return to China on July 1, showing a strong sense of unity in the country.
A photo exhibition focusing on Chinese women and their outstanding deeds over the past century at the Xiqu Center in West Kowloon kicked off the series of activities on Saturday. At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, HKSAR Chief Executive Carrie Lam emphasized the contributions of the women in advancing society, especially when it came to combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The CPC has been doing an excellent job in achieving gender equality, and has been working to protect women’s rights,” Lam said.
“We can see a significant improvement in women’s position in politics, in which the proportion of deputies to the National People’s Congress and members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference has increased a great deal over the decades.”
Well-known classic Chinese songs including My Motherland and Jasmine were also played at the ceremony. The activities scheduled for the next few weeks include floats, pop-up concerts and photo exhibitions in the HKSAR, according to So Cheung-wing, chairman of the Hong Kong Island Federation, quoted by local media outlet wenweipo.com.
“We hope Hong Kong compatriots will feel a sense of pride and belonging to our motherland through these activities,” added So.
