ISLAMABAD: Imran Khwaja, the sitting Deputy Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has been re-appointed, the ICC announced on Friday (November 25). The announcement culminates a week-long process that started with the ICC board meeting in Melbourne last week. He will hold the term for another two years.
Khwaja, originally from Singapore Cricket and mostly from the Associate members, did not meet any opposition in his re-election bid. Unlike last time, when he had to wither off challenge from Cricket West Indies’ Ricky Skerritt, no nomination was filed against him this time around. The whole process was done online.
“The process started after the Chairman election and it completed today. No one else wanted it. No opposition so no election,” an ICC member told Cricbuzz.
Khwaja currently holds an Associate Member Director position on the Board having been re-elected at the ICC Annual Conference in July 2022. Khwaja was first elected to the ICC Board in 2008 and has served as Deputy Chair since 2017.
Earlier last week, Greg Barclay of New Zealand was re-elected to the ICC Chair and with Khwaja’s re-appointment, the ICC will have the same elected management that came to power in 2020.
The only major change in the whole setup is the presence of Jay Shah, who holds the powerful and prestigious Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) chairman position.
