KARACHI: Amerigo Vespucci, the oldest active military vessel in the Italian Navy, arrived at Karachi port for a three-day goodwill visit.
Built in 1931, the tall ship is celebrated worldwide as “the most beautiful ship in the world”. Its 24 canvas sails, spanning a total surface of 2,600 square meters, exemplify its grandeur.
The ship’s engine room, brass deck instruments, and rosewood-crafted stairs reflect a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Equipped with both wind-powered sails and diesel engines, the Amerigo Vespucci served as a training and diplomatic vessel during its voyages.
The Italian ship, with its towering masts and intricate rigging, was warmly received upon docking in Karachi. Named after the famed Italian explorer, the vessel is on a global goodwill tour spanning 28 countries from 2023 to 2025, with Pakistan as one of its stops. During the visit, officers and crew from the ship will engage with counterparts from the Pakistan Navy. The Amerigo Vespucci retains its original navigational instruments and compass, which remain fully operational. –Agencies
