KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) senior leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman on Thursday asked the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to reciprocate fair play in accordance with the Karachi mayor election.
Addressing an event, Mr Rehman said, “Everyone had seen what happened on the day of the mayor election, If we accept this election, subsequent elections will likewise be rigged”.
Rehman added, “Even PPP leaders thought the JI had the right to select Karachi’s mayor”. “People tell me that it would be best to leave the country right now. In response, I advise people to keep working hard and not give up, Rehman continued”.
Days earlier, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, a leader of PPP, had taken oath as the new mayor of Karachi at a ceremony held at Bagh-e-Jinnah in the city centre and attended by diplomats and dignitaries from various walks of life. Salman Abdullah Murad, who also belongs to the ruling PPP, took oath as Karachi’s Deputy Mayor. It is the first time that the PPP, which has been ruling Sindh for the past 15 years, has clinched the coveted posts of Karachi’s mayor and deputy mayor. Wahab defeated Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman of Ja-maat-e-Islami in a closely contested election.
