Kashmir issue requires fair, early resolution: Chinese Scholar

BEIJING: The Kashmir issue, a legacy of history, requires a fair, reasonable and early resolution, which is the most crucial for maintaining peace and stability in South Asia.
This was stated by Prof. Cheng Xizhong, Senior Research Fellow at the Charhar Institute, a non-governmental Chinese think-tank on diplomacy and international studies based in Beijing.
The Kashmir issue has long been the core dispute between India and Pakistan, directly affecting their bilateral relations. It also serves as a significant trigger for regional tensions, he told media.
He believed that peaceful negotiation is the primary means to resolve the Kashmir conflict. India and Pakistan should fully communicate their respective positions and concerns within the framework of international law.
He went on to state the United Nations has adopted resolutions on multiple occasions, calling for respect for the right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people. Finding a way to realize the legitimate right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people is one of the keys to resolving the issue. This may require the joint participation and supervision of the international community to ensure that the self-determination process is fair, just and transparent.
Prof Cheng said that some influential countries ought to actively mediate at the diplomatic level, and ensure that the solutions are in line with the interests of the people in the Kashmir region.
He said that China has always advocated resolving the Kashmir issue through dialogue and consultation, and its support has played an important role in promoting regional peace and stability.
China firmly supports Pakistan’s sovereignty and security. Earlier this year, after a terrorist attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), India unilaterally took a series of extreme measures such as cutting off water, and accused Pakistan without providing any evidence. China clearly expressed its support for Pakistan’s efforts to defend national security and sovereignty.
China has always believed that the Kashmir issue is a historical issue between India and Pakistan. The relevant parties should exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that unilaterally change the status quo and escalate tensions, he stressed. –Agencies
