PYONGYANG: The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) said it fired warning shots toward its eastern and western coasts to send a “grave warning” to the Republic of Korea (ROK) for firing dozens of artillery shells earlier in the day, state media KCNA reported on Wednesday.
“The situation on the Korean Peninsula is getting worse due to the enemies’ repeated military provocations in the forefront area,” KCNA quoted a spokesperson for the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army.
The spokesperson urged its “enemies” to immediately stop any provocative actions that escalate military tensions.
The ROK kicked off its annual Hoguk field training on Monday to hone defense capabilities to counter DPRK’s nuclear and missile threats. The drills are scheduled to run until October 28.
The U.S. forces were also set to take part in the Hoguk field training exercise to enhance interoperability with ROK counterparts. – Agencies
