ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Madad Ali Sindhi on Friday lauded the efforts and services of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) for combating illiteracy. Addressing a seminar organized by AIOU on International Literacy Day here, the minister said that he is well-informed about the educational services provided by AIOU and expressed his satisfaction with the university’s nationwide services.
He extended his congratulations to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr Nasir Mahmood for organizing a seminar on World Literacy Day. AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Nasir Mahmood said there are three crore children in Pakistan who are not enrolled in schools, even after 76 years of independence.
This is a matter of great concern and requires a long-term plan to address, he added. He emphasized the significance of accurately measuring literacy. He further stressed the need to revise its definition to cater to the needs of individuals. The VC highlighted the importance of transitioning towards digital literacy and its potential to bring about positive change.
Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Irshad Ahmed Arshad and the Director General, National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) Mirza Nasiruddin Mashhood Ahmed also addressed the opening session of the seminar. The seminar was organized by AIOU in collaboration with NCHD and JICA.
