Minister optimistic of promoting road safety measures thru education

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training (FE&PT), Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, on Thursday expressed optimism about promoting road safety through education.
He expressed these views during the meeting with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, said a press release.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ongoing and future initiatives to promote road safety awareness among students, the inclusion of road safety education in schools, and avenues for enhanced collaboration with the UN. Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui emphasized that road safety was fundamental for the well-being of students and the creation of a safer future.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to nurturing responsible and safety-conscious citizens through education.
Road safety education has already been incorporated into the national curriculum, he informed. “At the primary level, students are being taught about traffic signals and safe road-crossing practices,” he said. He further noted that the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), in collaboration with the Motorway Police, was conducting continuous awareness campaigns on road safety among students.
“Training programs for teachers and student competitions are also helping to promote responsible behavior on the roads,” he said.
Dr Siddiqui highlighted that special education institutions were actively participating in road safety activities, ensuring inclusivity in awareness efforts.
He reiterated that the Ministry of (FE&PT) was committed to work closely with the United Nations to promote road safety education across Pakistan.
The National Curriculum Council (NCC) has already integrated road safety topics across all grade levels, he noted.
“Our shared goal is to reduce road accidents and fatalities through education,” he said, adding, “Pakistan is laying the foundation of a safer future through education.”
