NDMA issues flood alert amid rising water levels in Sutlej River

Staff Report

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday issued an alert regarding a potential flood situation in the Sutlej River, warning of a possible low-level flood at Ganda Singhwala in the coming days due to increased water flow and anticipated rainfall in upstream areas.

According to an NDMA spokesperson, the water discharge in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singhwala surged from 28,657 to 33,653 cusecs within the span of an hour, signalling a notable rise in river flow. The increase is being closely monitored as it poses a risk of inundation in the adjoining low-lying areas.

The spokesperson added that heavy rainfall is expected in the upper catchment areas of the Sutlej and Beas rivers from August 5 to August 7, which may further escalate water levels.

“A further increase in water flow in Sutlej and Beas rivers is expected during this period,” the spokesperson warned.

Providing details about water reservoirs across the border, the NDMA said Bhakra Dam in India is currently 55 percent full, while Pong Dam is at 56 percent of its capacity. The spokesperson cautioned that any additional release of water from these Indian dams could potentially amplify the river’s flow downstream, intensifying flood risks in parts of Punjab.

In view of the evolving situation, the NDMA has directed the local administration to remain on high alert and to ensure all emergency arrangements are in place. “Instructions have been issued for immediate response measures, efficient drainage systems, and preparation for a possible evacuation in vulnerable areas,” the spokesperson said.

The authority has urged residents living near the riverbanks to stay vigilant and follow updates issued by local authorities. It also advised fishermen and farmers in the region to take necessary precautions as the river conditions may change rapidly in the coming days.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has announced its full preparedness to deal with the ongoing monsoon flood situation.

Following the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, modern drones will be deployed in all districts of Punjab to ensure timely delivery of relief supplies. These drones will be capable of transporting up to 25 kilograms of essential items, potentially saving countless lives during emergencies.

PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia emphasized that proactive and timely measures are the only way to prevent tragedies like the recent Swat incident.

Meanwhile, PDMA Punjab has issued a flood alert, warning of urban flooding in major cities due to continued rainfall expected till August 8. The authority also highlighted the likelihood of increased water flow in the Sutlej, Chenab, Ravi, and surrounding rivers.
